NPD Responds to Reported Shooting

Just before 10 PM on Tuesday, May 28th, 2024, E911 received multiple calls from residents, and security, at Eastgate Apartments reporting that multiple shots had been fired in the complex during an altercation in a crowd of people.

According to callers, everyone, including the shooters, ran after the shots were fired. Units from the Newnan Police Department made it to the scene within minutes of being dispatched. Once they arrived they were informed by witnesses that the suspected shooters had left in a vehicle. While investigators were able to locate shell casings from the shooting and its original location, they were unable to locate the suspects or their vehicle at that time.

Thankfully no one was hit by the shots fired by the suspects.

Arrests

Booking reports show that investigators with the Newnan Police Department have arrested two teenagers for their part in Tuesday’s shooting incident. The two were booked on Wednesday night on the following charges – both remain in custody without bail.

While the suspects share a surname and booking records show they reside at the same address, NCST has been unable to confirm their relation to each other.

UPDATE: Statements made by members of the Newnan Police Department after the publishing of this article confirm that the two suspects are brothers. A third suspect has also been arrested for their involvement.

Criminal History

We’ve been able to find the following criminal history for Kayvion Mayner.

Coweta County

On October 10th of 2021, Kayvion Mayner, then 16, was arrested in Coweta County for his part in the Armed Robbery at the Texaco on Temple Ave. He was charged, as well as 2 co-defendants, with Armed Robbery with Firearm. He was granted a $10,000 bond ( with conditions ) and released on October 12th, 2021.

On January 5th, 2023, Kayvion Mayner was indicted by a Coweta County Grand Jury on a single charge of Armed Robbery.

Kayvion Mayner remained free on bail as the case continues in the Coweta County Superior Court. One of his co-defendants has already taken a plea deal in the case that saw him sentenced to 20 years, 10 years to serve with 10 years on probation.

On May 5th, 2024, Kayvion was notified of an August 13th, 2024 hearing on this case.

Troup County

On July 3rd, 2022, then 17, and while out on bail for the Armed Robbery in Coweta County, Kayvion Mayner was arrested by the Lagrange Police Department for a slew of charges after he ran from officers when they attempted to make contact with him to ask questions regarding a separate incident that they were investigating ( he ended up not being involved in that incident. ). After a short chase, he was caught and according to the indictment and court transcripts became physically combative and verbally threatened the life of the officers.

Upon his arrest, he was charged with 2 counts of Obstruction of a Police Officer ( Misd ), one count of Obstruction of a Police Officer ( Felony ), and 2 counts of Terroristic Threats and Acts ( Felony ). He was indicted by a Troup County Grand Jury on September 9th of that year and entered a negotiated plea deal that resulted in the felony obstruction being removed. He pleaded guilty to the remaining 4 counts and was sentenced on February 2, 2023, to 10 years with 2 years to be served in the Troup County Detention Center and the rest on probation.

Given credit for time served as he’d remained in jail from his arrest on July 3rd, 2022, his tentative release date should have been July 3rd, 2024.

He obviously didn’t serve the full 24 months that he was intended to. Why this is the case and when he was actually released is unknown at this time.

Summary

Kayvion Mayner was on bail for the October 10th, 2021 arrest when he committed the July 3rd, 2022 incident above. Our research seems to show that this incident had no affect on his bail status in the Coweta County case.

According to sentencing records, Mayner should have been in jail this Tuesday when he committed this shooting. Either way, he did so under the conditions of the bail in the Coweta County case and the probation conditions in the Troup County case.
