Georgia State Patrol Releases Incident Report

The Georgia State Patrol has released its preliminary incident report regarding the August 24th fatality accident off North Hwy 29 that took the life of Robin Slaton, 64, of Union City. The report is the first time the suspect has been named and elaborates on the charges he’s facing.

On August 24th at 8:45 PM, according to the initial report released by the Georgia State Patrol, Hammett was traveling south on Hwy 29 N in an F250 truck when he crossed the center line making contact with the front of a Chevy Malibu driven by Robin Slaton, 64, of Union City.

Once his truck made contact with the car, it pushed both vehicles south on Hwy 29 N before leaving the roadway and coming to a rest with the F250 on top of the Malibu.

Hammett was transported via Life Flight to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Slaton, tragically, was trapped in her vehicle and passed away from her injuries before she could be extricated.

The accident occurred on the Coweta and Fulton County Line, which led to agencies from both counties responding to the scene and assisting each other. It’s believed at this point that the charges will be brought against Hammett in Coweta County.

The GSP Specialized Crash Reconstruction Team (SCRT) is still working on its investigation of the accident.

The Georgia State Patrol has charged Hammett with the following charges.

  • Failure to Maintain Lane
  • Reckless Driving
  • Driving under the Influence
  • Homicide by Vehicle
  • Possession of Marijuana Less than 1 oz
  • Purchase, possession, manufacture, distribution, or sale of controlled substances or marijuana
  • Purchase, possession, manufacture, distribution, or sale of controlled substances or marijuana
Hammett has not been booked due to his medical condition.

The booking photo of Hammett below is from a 2020 booking by the GA Dept. of Natural Resources regarding a criminal hunting violation.

We will update with further information once the GSP’s SCRT has completed its investigation.
